Military Families Increasingly Joining Food Lines

Washington Post notes that bread lines have become an unlikely sight on and around military bases. Some highlight statistics:

-Though military pay risen faster (42%) than private sector (32%)

-Unemployment rate of military spouses more than twice national average!

-Spouses often quit good jobs while other parent was deployed

-National Guard members and reservists returned to find positions eliminated, or lost chances at promotion after multiple deployments

-Service members and their families, including veterans, retirees and reservists, have used $88 million in food stamps at U.S. commissaries this year, according to the Defense Commissary Agency. That is triple the amount used before the recession.

“Just as people in American society have issues with credit and debt, our families have that, too!” – Barbara Thompson, Director of Defense Department Office of Family Policy, Children and Youth
